Beginning students who are children I use Mel Bay's Children's Guitar Method. Depending on their learning curve, I may use other methods and books to their learning language. Adults, I listen to their desires in learning their instrument and gear my lessons accordingly. I love how my students would be able to play and perform a piece they really love in recitals and be able to participate in a group performance as well. For any age, music teachers have to be firm but patient. Sometimes, it's hard to stay on track when doing something rote or outside your comfort zone, and I am very understanding of that (as someone who begged my mom to let me quit piano lessons as an elementary schooler).
