EXPERIENCE
I started playing the guitar and singing when I was nine years old when I received a Kmart guitar under the Christmas tree. I fell in love with it right away. I received a better guitar as a gift in my teens and wanted to learn all I could about the guitar and how to play it. I began to lead worship with my guitar in my own Youth group and eventually Directed and lead the music ministry at my church. I've been a Worship Leader, Minister of Music and Worship Pastor at various church in the Pacific Northwest. I started teaching guitar in 1994 as I love to give the gift of music. It grew to teaching all the instruments I play as well as voice because singing is a passion of mine. My favorite place to be is teaching a student their instrument and watch their progress and seeing their face light up as they grow more competent. Many of my students have gone on to be professional musicians and singers. From Classical to Heavy Metal, I love all the genres of music and teach them all.
METHODS USED
Beginning students who are children I use Mel Bay's Children's Guitar Method. Depending on their learning curve, I may use other methods and books to their learning language. Adults, I listen to their desires in learning their instrument and gear my lessons accordingly. Typically, I've used Alfred's Basic Guitar and Bass Method, Aaron Shearer Glassic Guitar Technique, Hal Leonard Guitar method, Alfred's Basic Guitar Scales and Modes, Hal Leonard Fingerpicking, Hal Leonard Christmas Carols for easy and advanced guitar, Hal Leonard Classical Guitar Christmas, Hal Leonard "A Treasury of Classical Guitar Repertoire, Mel Bay's Students Guide to Music Theory, Alternate Tunings by Woody Mann and Youtube.com. If the student is willing I will include them in recitals and other events to allow them to perform in front of an audience.
LESSON STYLE
Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. I am laid back and not judgmental. My heart is to be your encourager in whatever music and instrument you want to conquer!
