I began teaching in high school, helping my fellow guitar players and others in band and jazz band. I continued off and on through college, and became a full time private lesson teacher not long after graduating. I taught full time for about ten years and then moved into working with music publishers and music notation projects. I returned to teaching part time in 2016, both online and in person. I generally split lessons into three sections, 1/3 with chords, 1/3 scales, 1/3 with songs, but every student is different, for example, If your goal is to strictly learn chords to sing folks songs over, I will emphasize more chord reading and learning time. If you want to play leads, I will spend more time emphasizing scales to help you learn how to improvise. When I teach I enjoy seeing my students express their emotions through their music, and develope a passion for their instrument. That passion is so very magical, and I aim to encourage this with personalized lesson plans hinging off of the musical stylings of a musicians that my student is interested in so they can begin to build a unique and passionate style of their own. I feel that, like my piano teachers always said, practice does in fact make perfet. It's amazing what can happen with even a 1/2 hour every other day when it comes to weekly lessons. I tend to assign more, but my point is that it's extremely important to practice! Also, what helped students the most - across the board - was theory workbooks, especially when it came to composition. Getting students interested in composing lends way to their completion rate when it came to homework too! Read More

I strive to be a balanced teacher that engages the students musical interests while also setting a high (but patient) bar for technical facility and discipline. As someone who has received classical and jazz training, I love to be able to provide students those dual/complimentary curriculum tracks, and, for those students that are eager to dig in to the theory side of things, connect the dots between.
