I grew up in a musical family. With my grandmother accompanying me on piano, I sang at church, senior citizens, American legion, Kiwanis and Elks clubs. Later my father joined me, and we traded off melody and harmony lines, our voices blending perfectly. I started piano lessons at 14. and continued for many years. I know what constitutes a talented teacher and what does not. I took guitar, opera, performance and music theory at college.
As a performing musician I have obtained many skills and tricks of the trade. I have performed and taught in several different genres including folk, rock, gospel and R & B. I started teaching piano, voice, guitar, songwriting and performance over 25 years ago. I enjoy the one on one quality of the lessons, and love to see the light bulb of comprehension go on. I have also taught in classroom settings. I have access to a grand piano as well as a keyboard. There are distinct differences between acoustic and electric guitars and I would be happy to explain the differences and help you choose which is right for you.
For children I start with easy and fun fundamental books. For older students I use Alfred's All in One for Adults series. I wrote my own vocal teaching book. It consists of theory, activity and homework. For guitar, I start out with Mel Bay and then move onto my own guitar book with lessons and songs in order of difficulty.
Teaching, writing and performing music is my greatest passion in life. On stage at 7, it has been one of my greatest joys and I love passing the skills on to interested individuals. Students progress at a level they are comfortable with and I make sure that a concept is completely understood before moving on.
