My teaching is very student-driven. I try to keep the students interests as a primary goal in keeping their interest level and so that they can progress in a musical situation. When they are interested in what they are learning, they strive for success. I try to acknowledge their successes and accomplishments which helps keep them learning and wanting to learn more. The best way to learn music is to teach it effectively, and I ALWAYS am learning from my students in a variety of ways, whether it be a new group that I'm not familiar with, or another style or genre that is new and fresh. As a composer, Erik writes music centered around emotional storytelling and immersive musical journeys. This philosophy carries into his teaching, where students are encouraged not only to learn their instrument but also to understand how music communicates feeling, character, and narrative. Whether students are preparing for performances, auditions, school ensembles, or learning music for personal enjoyment, Erik strives to create a supportive environment where students grow both musically and personally. Ive always found it incredibly rewarding when hard work pays off, and this means something different to everyone. Ive found in my own studies that I can have breakthrough moments merely vocalizing or finally getting that one measure perfect after Ive spent a day working at it over and over. As a vocal captain for fellow professional colleagues, hearing their voices come together in harmony after working diligently on a piece of music has taken me to that place in your soul where you feel like youve awakened. My teaching style consists of setting realistic short term and long term goals for my students. I always make sure my students understand the material I am showing them. I encourage them to challenge themselves to achieve their goals they never thought they could achieve. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. Read More

As I mentioned before, I evaluate each student’s starting ability and talent and devise a starting point accordingly. I strive to motivate and inspire each student so that they begin to love the music they play and understand it well. I teach each student based on his/her ability and potential and see that they make progress at their own pace. I encourage progress and results as well as enjoyment of practicing and playing music. I emphasize techniques and every musical ingredient necessary to achieve a superior, artistic level of playing. Read More

For beginning students, I normally start with Alfred's Drum Method. This book works on the fundamentals of reading snare drum music and basic technique. Once the students grasps the basics on reading and playing with a metronome then we tend to move to Tommy Igoe's Groove Essentials (while still working on the Alfred's Method). After the student has began to play with the audio tracks and have succesfully gone through a few lessons from Groove Essentials then we begin to work on some solo repertoire and personal favorites as well.
