I guide my instruction in order to keep my lessons, fun, engaging, and valuable to my students, and I customize each lesson to their interests and needs. Typically, I teach piano along with an area of emphasis, whether it be composition, improvisation, production, or songwriting. Most beginner students will start with basic technique: How to hold a pick, where to place your fingers, etc. After that I like to move on to chords as quickly as possible. This may require some extended lessons on finger strength and technique. If I am teaching bass, the next step is feel and groove. I would obviously include some more general music terms and ideas throughout the lessons. More advanced students will get a custom tailored experience based on their interests. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has started to grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. I do try to maintain a balance of classical music, modern music, and music theory. Read More

The first priority for me is to dully understand what each student and parent wants from the desire for private instruction. In that case, I work with them on whatever they may be playing in their respective school band programs. Read More
