Overview:
I am primarily a guitar player from the Hudson Valley in New York, currently living in Nashville, TN. I have worked with many amazing musicians around the world on 3 different cruise ships. I have been teaching since around 2011, which is also when I began performing live. I went to Dutchess Community College and SUNY New Paltz universities, where I studied music (mostly jazz and metal/rock) and graduated with a B.S. in Contemporary Music degree. Other than guitar, I play and teach bass guitar, ukulele, and beginner piano/keyboard as well. I also teach general jazz/classical music theory, arranging, composition, songwriting, production, and I tutor for students attending or preparing for music studies in school/university.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching since around 2011, after only have been playing guitar for 2 years. I learned very quickly , primarily playing metal and jazz. I played trumpet in band when I was a child, so this helped me learn to sight-read music on guitar. This allowed me to play in the university bands at both schools I attended, mainly playing jazz music. Teaching has spawned a fiery passion that I want to explore and encourage, eventually making it to the University level teaching classes and private lessons.
METHODS USED
My method for teaching is individualization. All my lessons are individualized for each student's ability level and musical interests. If need be, I use certain books to supplement my lessons and for personal at home practice. Normally I only recommend books to students that want to further their understanding and ability in sight-reading, drawing from my own experiences learning from various books and online sources. I often encourage my students to learn songs instead of just focusing on exercises and technique.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style is very relaxed and laid back. I like to let the students be themselves and tell me exactly what they personally are trying to achieve with their music. If they want to secretly be a metalhead shredding like Steve Vai, I want them to tell me and I will be happy to help them get there! If they want to be the next Taylor Swift, that's okay too! I don't hold my lessons to a clock; by that I mean unless I have a tight schedule, I like to keep a relaxed and un-rushed atmosphere that helps the student learn the best.

I had a great time learning bass with James. We're gonna be good buddies, since he's a metal head like me. Really awesome teacher.

I enjoy working with James. He is very positive in his approach and knows how to play the guitar well. I feel better about starting out learning on a guitar now that I have had a chance to have lessons with James. His homework is neither too hard nor too easy, so I feel like I'm making progress.
