I had been fairly brave helping other students. and even those younger than I, to do things at church or at school. But, I discovered, accidentally, through a competition in our high school band program, that I could actually teach. It's very important to me for students grow a passion for music. I celebrate every victory with them, no matter the size. Helping a student grow over time by setting really obtainable goals every week and setting short and long time goals. Dedication, perseverance, preparation, and practice always pay off as long as you're using the correct methods for practicing, staying in time and being consistent. I'm not the kind of teacher who gets angry if the student didn't practice the homework or lesson material they were given. What matters is the students being able to get a general idea and understanding of the lesson where they can continue moving forward in their musical/artistic career and possibly apply what they learned in their own journey. I started teaching back in 1995 due to repeated requests from customers at the music store where I was working retail at the time. Turned out to be the best decision I ever made as I left the retail world within 1 more year and never went back.
