My method of teaching is to start students with a strong foundation of buzzing and making characteristic sounds on the horn. This includes buzzing with and without the mouthpiece. Also, my students must be able to read music. Reading music is very important to me, having the students be musically literate with a decent tone will take a student far in their musical career. I have always believed that music is a conversation between the musician and the audience, and the instrument is the interpreter. With this in mind, with any age, I start with a regular conversation. Knowing the passion, interest level, and motivation of the students helps me create a method of teaching that is specific to the individual. I also learn their experience and knowledge level. For beginners, which is mainly what I've taught so far, I try and see what their goals are and teach them accordingly. Both students I've taught have had entirely different goals, one just trying to learn drumset and the other wanting to learn a song for his talent show. I love giving my students the option to expess themselves and approach them with the methods they enjoy and desire. One of my strengths as a teacher is adaptability. I teach interactively and flexibly, tailoring instruction to each students individual needs and learning style. For students with limited background, I assign simplified arrangements of familiar pieces to sustain motivation. Lastly, I strive to make students feel a sense of fulfillment and motivation while studying with me. I assign goals that are attainable for each student, including giving public performances and participating in competitions whenever possible, as students make remarkable progress by observing peers and performing regularly.
