For beginners I like to start with note identification, octaves, and basic open CAGED chords then move to the open minor chords, pentatonic, and major scales next . As students understanding of the fret board develops I try to move these concepts into other position by highlighting relativity and connecting chord shapes as they're highlighted in different scale patterns. In the meanwhile I like to offer students song material relevant to these concepts for practice. Read More

I began teaching five years ago around the age of twenty. Now, at twenty-five, I have had the opportunity to teach people from all walks of life, with ages ranging from 6 to 60! I encourage students to practice "perfect practice", which means they are as relaxed as possible when practicing (mentally and physically). Daily practice is also something I cannot emphasize enough, even if only for five or ten minutes a day. Read More

Besides teaching privately, I am also the adjunct cello teacher for The Pennington School. My responsibilities also include running sectionals, orchestra rehearsals as well as performing for various functions and with the students in their concerts. This has given me the opportunity to work with an ensemble, which is something I did really enjoy while working in the public schools. With over 20 years of teaching experience, I have worked with students from the beginning level through advanced. Read More

Right around age six, I discovered that my hands were finally big enough to fret a guitar! I spent the next decade banging away on my own amongst the redwoods north of San Francisco. Bass, keys, mandolin, and vocals soon slipped into my repertoire, filling the space where a proper social life might otherwise have been. I swore to never go pro, lest it ruin the fun. For most of this time, I had assumed that good music died when The Beatles broke up, but in high school I flung my mind open to the stylistic diversity of the digital age. Read More

I love the learning process and to see students progress through the stages of learning an instrument. I taught myself to play the piano before I started formal lessons. I began playing the saxophone at the same time I took up the piano. I entered my undergraduate program in 1992, majoring in music education with the saxophone and piano as my principle instruments. During my studies at the University of South Alabama, a new program was started in MIDI and I attended an extra year to master digital audio. Read More

I play the banjo, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and drums. From 1976 to 1980,I was a member of The John Herald Band, and played venues from the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, California to Carnegie Hall in New York. He then formed The Lewis Brothers, Philadelphia's premier bluegrass band, which performed at the Philadelphia Folk Festival as well as hundreds of clubs throughout Philadelphia, the Northeastern US, and Europe. Next, I expanded to new musical areas and formed a tight four-piece blues band. Read More

My teaching style will be designed to inspire my students. I am extremely knowledgeable in music theory and all the technical aspects of playing guitar, but I also want it to be a very creative and fun process. There is discipline involved in learning guitar, but I am prepared to teach guitar in way that will motivate students to work hard and be getting better at playing but that is also fun and relaxing.
