Guitar: For children, I prefer the FJH Young Beginner Guitar method, but for adults I would prefer Hal Leonard if the student is looking to learn both chords and melody using folk music. I could also teach guitar based on gospel and Christian praise music if the student prefers. I have taught students with an interest in rock music, but only to give them the basic foundation skills of chords and notes to build on with another teacher who has more of a rock music speciality. I have amassed a catalog of handwritten materials over the years, as well as some books and exercises from my old teacher. There are a few exercises from the essential elements book that I like to use with beginners, but not enough to warrant purchasing the book. I provide photocopies of all the lessons, as well as supplemental videos in some cases. I use generally use Faber and Faber for piano and the Yamaha method for guitar. However, each student learns differently therefore I like to meet and assess the needs before choosing a course to follow. For band students, I use the school's chosen method of instruction supplementing with theory, technique and performance pieces. For piano students, I get to know each student's taste in music and choose accordingly. I have always enjoyed teaching others. Even in high school, I consistently helped my peers with their learning and enjoyed helping them learn how to play percussion instruments. After starting college in 2009, I began formally teaching percussion privately and in groups at high schools in my area. I have since expanded to teaching guitar, bass guitar, and composition, incorporating compositional elements into all of my lessons. My teaching style is very focused on the student's desire to learn what they want. Very early into taking on a new student, I try to find what/who inspires them. Doing so allows me to tailor my teaching to each individual student. I also like to have 3 main "small improvement" objectives for each lesson. There's improvement on what we did during our last lesson, improvement during the lesson with something new I will introduce, and improvement for our next lesson with something I will give to the students to work on themselves after our lesson.
