I'm a patient instructor that allows each person to grow at their own pace. We all have a goal of what we want to achieve and I guide you toward that goal. My primary goal is to create great musicians- people who are versed in many styles and have a handle on music as a language. I want to share my knowledge to help you find your musical voice and the creativity you seek through the guitar.
I'm a multi-instrumentalist, improvisor, composer and educator who takes great joy in teaching and sharing music with people of all ages. I've been deeply fortunate to have studied closely with multiple master musicians of various traditions. Perhaps the teacher who has had the deepest impact on my teaching methods is W.A. Mathieu, former arranger and bandmember of the Duke Ellington and Stan Kenton orchestras. I studied with Mathieu for three years. I've performed up and down the west coast and am an active player in the Bay Area music scene.
I'm a passionate and motivated teacher with a background in many styles of music. I recently relocated to the Bay Area and can't wait to help students here pursue their passion and develop their talents. I have performed musical theater, orchestral music, jazz, chamber music, and recorded with rock and hip hop groups. I owe so much of what I've accomplished to the great teachers in my life, especially my private lesson instructors. Teaching is very rewarding for me and I love to share my passion for music.
I have been paying guitar for over 15 years. My love of improvisation brought me to the California Jazz Conservatory where I have been studying since 2012. In fall 2016 I will graduate with a B.M. in Jazz Studies, focusing on guitar. I play in a local rock/funk band, The Electic Soul Factory, and I am a founder a of The Moldy Fig Improvised Music Collective, for which I compose and arrange the material.
Hello! I have over 20 years of experience teaching and performing as a guitarist, composer, producer and recording for my band. I live and breath music 24/7 and I absolutely love to share my knowledge with my students. Besides teaching Guitar and theory, I also teach music production as well. I'm officially endorsed by the following brands: EVH (Eddie Van Halen) Gear, Jackson Guitars, Morley Pedals, SIT Strings, InTune Guitars Picks and Line 6.

Students are able to start taking guitar lessons with Musika by the age of 6. Students of this age are advised to learn on a half-sized classical guitar with nylon strings, as it will be much easier to play. They will start by learning simple tunes on the top strings of the guitar. By age 7-8, students will have progressed on to learning to play chords and how to play and sing along to some of their favorite songs. At age 10-12, students are often able to hold a full size guitar quite comfortably, and may want to learn rock music on an electric guitar.
Students typically start with the basics, such as how to hold the guitar, how to fret notes with one hand, and how to strum or pluck the strings with the other. The teachers in our network will cover sight reading, guitar chords, and basic music theory. All of which are needed for students to perform and understand the inner-workings of their favorite songs. More advanced students can work on jazz improvisation, classical technique, as well as rock or blues guitar solos.
At Musika, we suggest that adult students looking to start guitar lessons do so with a specific aim or goal in mind. Beginners may have goals such as learning to play their favorite songs or to write their own music, whereas advanced students might want to develop a particular technique or aspect of their guitar playing. Irrespective of your experience or level, the teachers in our network can help you to achieve your goals. Remember, developing playing skills can take time. The best way to ensure you achieve your goals is through regular lessons and consistent practice.
Young students should start on a half size or three-quarter size acoustic guitar. Older students can start on an electric guitar, as long as they are able to hold it comfortably. Many student model guitars can be purchased for $150 to $200 new. An electric guitarist will need an amplifier and cables, at additional cost. Remember, higher quality instruments are easier to play and give the student the best chance of liking it.
Save time by having a teacher come to your home! No need to pack up and transport your guitar between lessons, and no need to guzzle gas either. The instructors in our network provide a private, customized one-on-one lesson for each student. Your home will also be both a comfortable and safe environment for your lessons.

"I've been taking lessons with Richard for just a little over six months now and all I can say is that he is an amazing instructor. He hasn't followed a set one size fits all script in his lessons but has instead worked with my musical interests and at my pace in a way that is truly valuable. He has also kept things fun, interesting, and engaging even at times when I've felt overwhelmed and discouraged. This is an instructor that is truly adaptable to his students and will make sure that they get the most out of their lessons. I would definitely recommend him to anybody that truly wants to unlock their musical potential."

“Lynn has taught my daughter guitar for 9 years. She has always managed to keep her engaged and provide an exceptional learning experience. She tailors the lesson specifically to the student’s interests and abilities. She provides many opportunities for students to showcase their talents outside of lessons. We love working with Lynn.” Maureen Young, Dir. of Finance, Aug 2015

Ali was an amazing voice coach! She taught in a way that made sense to me, and helped me find the voice placements I needed. I didn't know I could sound like that! My development with her was leaps and bounds rather than tiny dreadful steps that happen when you don't know what's going on! Ali was dedicated to helping me work on an audition for a music scholarship and I nailed it all thanks to her, seriously. I can't thank her enough! She helped me with the tools and confidence I needed to sing in the real world alone rather than just back row in a large choir.

Bill has been great with my 2 young children (age 3 & 6). He has integrated games into the lessons - they have enjoyed showing us how to play the games when it is time to practice piano. Bill has been easy to contact and rescheduling has not been a problem if we have a conflict at our regular lesson time.

“I took drum lessons from Mark for about 7 months. I have been playing for 38 years but always thrive to learn more. He was able to provide me alternative exercises and help me gain a better understanding of my opportunities. I have been able to take my playing to another level. His approach to teaching is perfect for any level of student, beginner or advanced. He is a true professional and an outstanding person. You won't go wrong with Mark!” Blaine Vaz

Eduard is an amazing teacher. (Coming from someone who previously knew the basics of playing and music.) He is not to harsh with his words and is extremely nice. Eduard has a great amout of experience and displays it through his teachings. Specifically by making it easy to follow along with his words to actions. As a person with a wondering mind whom is distracted easily, it is easy to pay attention.

I started my 5 yr old daughter with Karleen this Fall. Karleen has a calm and honest disposition. My daughter adores her and cannot wait for her arrival. I was concerned because my daughter is not so willing to "practice" during the week. Karleen advised me to allow her habits of practicing to evolve naturally as her love and understanding of piano increases. She emphasized how nurturing my daughter's love of music is most important. This was music to my ears :)

Jessie is the finest musician I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. I find her overall concept of approaching an instrument to be both comprehensive and effective. Each technique she has acquired has made it possible for her to tailor her method to a variety of ages and individuals. I cannot speak more highly of Miss Jessie's abilities. Her lengthy and impressive cradecials speak for themselves. I recommend no hesitation in seeking her services!
