Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it is important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs.

For beginners, learning basic chords and melodies including songs chosen by the student. For intermidiate, learning some repetoire of a student's preferred style and applying theory/adding new ideas as well as becoming more famliar with the guitar neck For advanced, learning improvisational concepts and practice techniques or difficult song passages that will improve student's technique and musical vocabulary. Reading music is an option for any level.

My musical journey started at a very young age. I would get up and put on my 45's and set up my metal TV tray with pots and pans and away I would go playing the drums along with the records. At 6 my school had a demonstration of instruments. I went home and exclaimed to my parents that I wanted to play Saxophone. After seeing the price they asked if I wanted a guitar. I said yes. I started lesson at 6 with a local teacher that would come around to all the kids in my neighborhood. I took lesson for 6 years and then went on to explore sports. At 18 I went back to my guitar and relearned by myself all the lessons I had gone through. I also started taking lesson at a local music store and I attended the college of San Mateo and took 4 semesters of Theory and musicianship. I started giving lessons a few years later working at Guitars unlimited in Menlo Park, CA. At 21 I began playing professionally in clubs and festivals. I've continued playing professionally since and teaching guitar.

I like to use familiar songs as vehicles to teach. In my UCSC class, I start with Beatles songs because everyone knows them and they're well-liked. I always like students to suggest songs they want to learn as well, since they will be more likely to practice and be more engaged in practice if the song is something they enjoy. I use these as vehicles to teach chord voicings, theory, intervals and technique. I do not use notation but prefer guitar-centric language such as chord charts and tablature.

My teaching experience dates back to the beginning of college (2006). As I began to teach more and more I found the transfer of knowledge incredibly inspiring. Regular practice on a consistent schedule is part of any instrument, but I have found that it cannot be achieved without interest or motivation. My goal is to keep lessons fun and productive, but most importantly geared specifically for each student. When I was younger I found that a lot of my lessons didn't relate to my self expression, which slowed the learning process. My students are encouraged to get out there and play, compete and compose original material. I'm always looking to bring on new students of all ages!
