It's important to cultivate a student's musical knowledge by building upon their current foundation. Similar to the way children learn a language, music students of all ages should start by listening and singing/playing before learning to read and even write. Combining this natural approach with a focus on how and why to develop good technique helps students get the results they're looking for. Read More

I've been teaching in one form or another for over 20 years. I ahem also had some really fun mentor relationships as well. One in particular in Mt. Juliet TN. A young man I met at age 10 and is now 21 years old. He had released three records since we first met. I'm very proud of Zach. I've played guitar on over 30 recordings and played over 1,000 shows/concerts. I've charted on the Billboard Chart and my current pop/rock single is #1 in Europe and U.K. on the Euro Indie Top 200! My teaching approach begins by meeting the students where they are in regards to musical capability. We soon push the boundaries of what they think they are capable of and allows them to apply the music theory in real time. A consistent schedule, whether it be during our schedule lesson or a follow up email packet, is the distinctive difference in my lesson plans. This practice regimen should continue long after our scheduled lessons and should be one of many vital keys to your child's future successes. Read More

Essentially, I believe in methods for instrumental instruction. I have my favorites for each instrument I teach. A method is like a staircase with which the students are able to methodically progress in music and it is the fundamental for any particular style of music they would like to enjoy practicing and performing. Of course, additional material can also be added during the lessons according to the current level of the students and specific styles they would like to get acquainted with through their practice Read More

It's all about having a clear goal in mind and working towards it: we'll have conversations about objectives and musical preferences (classical? jazz? rock and pop?) and then develop goals based on those preferences (playing live? what kind of pieces/songs?). Once I have an idea of where the student wants to be, I share my lesson plans with them and tell them what particular exercises or songs/pieces will fit those goals. Read More

Listening to the goals or having the student create goals is a very important first step towards a successful student. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. I am a kind and understanding teacher, pressuring students to reach goals on a time line isn't something that I feel would be productive. Creative teaching and exploring the entire musical world is a life long journey, so no need to rush it, but learning the tools to navigate your way through is something that can be invaluable. For beginning students both children and adults, I typically start with Bruce Pearson's Standard of Excellence books. Once my younger students have progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I begin to introduce solo repertoire that is appropriate for their first recital performance. Once the adults have progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I try to find out what the student is interested in and guide my instruction towards that interest, all while keeping the lessons engaging and fun.
