I've helped new beginner students start their flute exploration with the correct embouchure, posture, and technique right from the beginning. I've worked with students who have been on their own for a while, helping to correct any bad habits that had snuck in. I've helped students reinforce the technical basics of scales, daily exercises, breathing, and long tones so that their music soars. I've helped students with specific solos and band music so that a future performance is as close to perfect as possible. Read More

Every student is looking to achieve their own goals on an instrument and I'm here to help you get there. As a teacher I will listen to you and give you constant feedback on how you are doing. I try to push my students to levels of play they could not achieve without my guidance. How I guide you is ultimately up to you because I'm here to serve you as a teacher. Read More

Fortunately, music has been the central part of my life since I began lessons. Early on I knew I wanted to be a professional, and practiced to be able to study at some of the best music institutions in this country. My first formal training took place at the Interlochen Center for the Arts. Oberlin College, the Aspen Music Festival, Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University and Carnegie Hall followed. I started teaching two years ago at a private lesson studio in Denver called My Music Skool. My main focus was on piano and saxophone. Now I teach privately as a freelance musician. Two points I emphasize when teaching are practicing at least once a day no matter how long you play and learning what inspires you. There will always be some sort of theory I sneak in whether it's learning scales or building technical skills that will build confidence and ability, but if these devices aren't being applied to the type of music that inspires the student, then learning music becomes discouraging instead of fun. My teaching experience began in Webster, South Dakota as their high school band director for 11 years. I was then invited to move back to my college town of Brookings, South Dakota to be their middle school band director. I moved to Sioux Falls and taught in the Catholic School System for a number of years. Then I was fortunate to teach my last 11 years in beautiful southern California where I taught instrumental music at elementary to high school levels. Read More

I've been teaching most of my adult life. I started tutoring while still in high school, and I continued as a teaching assistant as a college student. I taught at Hope College for six years in a number of different subjects: saxophone, jazz ensembles, music theory, aural skills, piano class, and music appreciation. I even ran the percussion ensemble for one semester, which was a blast! I love my AF band job, but I do miss teaching full-time. Read More
