I attended Walt Whitman High School and was a member of its award winning Jazz Ensemble as a Tenor Saxophonist. However I can teach without a book on any instruments and compose assignments as I have done in the past. For beginning students I prefer Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, but also work with any method book a student uses in their band class. Students will also work from the Peters/Yoder Master Theory Series.
