My teaching style consists of setting realistic short term and long term goals for my students. I always make sure my students understand the material I am showing them. I encourage them to challenge themselves to achieve their goals they never thought they could achieve. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. Read More

I love working with students and try to get them to learn as much as they can about the guitar or bass guitar. I teach all ages from ages 9 through 45 and I love working with them. I have been playing bass guitar for 12 years and guitar for 10 years and I practice everyday. I started out taking bass guitar lessons and eventually started playing in bands as a bassist and taught many students around the world. Read More

I've been teaching for about 7 years at all skill levels and truly enjoy connecting with students through lessons. I have taught a wide variety of styles from Hip-Hop to Jazz to Rock to Funk and the list goes on and on. While I think that being very thorough in technique and skill in reading notation is an important part of getting better at playing an instrument, it can still seem like you're all by yourself in the process unless you have someone to connect with and that's what I like to bring to your lessons. For beginner students I use the Hal Leonard method to teach reading and positioning. Chords I teach at the pace the student is learning to play them cleanly (and this varies tremendously), starting with the easier open chords and moving on to progressively more difficult voicings. There are certainly some good beginner pieces in the hal leonard books and sometimes I pull recital material out of the William Leavit book. Read More

I have published my own series of method books to cover a wide range student needs. In addition, I often create materials depending on the student's interests. For more formal styles, I will use traditional methods created by Hal Leonard, Mel Bay, Frederick Noad etc.. My philosophy of teaching is that lesson materials must match the students interests and ability. Methods and materials must be carefully chosen or created to move them to the next level of playing, without frustration or boredom. Read More

What I have found works best with semi-slow but significant results is the idea of 'planting seeds'. I describe this concept quite regularly with my students, and what I mean by it is that we will often talk about important musical ideas and simply make the student aware of what's happening. They may not totally understand it right away, but the seed is planted. We start off planting many seeds and sometimes the same seed multiple times. Read More

I began teaching as soon as I felt I had a comfortable grasp on my instrument(s) as a teenager in high school. While in college I briefly stopped teaching but resumed before graduating, and have been teaching in home lessons again since completion. For new students, nothing will help you progress as a musician more than consistent practice; there is no shortcut. But with that consistent practice will come a sense of pride and motivation at what has been accomplished and the desire to continue. Read More
