I like to teach without books as much as possible as I feel it allows the student to internalize musical concepts better. The book series I use however is the Rubank method books. These have easy fundamental exercises to help keep the chops in shape and to work on reading music. My method when teaching students that are starters (kids) i used books like teaching little fingers to play piano and john Thompson which introduce learning of notes, their instrument, posture, and rhythm. Most of these books are in sets and will take the student to an advanced bigger player! From here I incorporate a method of learning at least 3-4 pieces ( A piece that has mostly a melodic line, a piece that concerns more of rhythmic exercises and then to a last piece which is a study) i will also top it up with scales and arpeggios and also a sense of knowing your instrument overall, listening , Aural and also incorporate sight reading . Currently, I teach at at an elementary school in Palm Beach County. (Florida Public Schools) I am teaching ages k-5 general music, chorus, and band. The instruments I teach weekly include trumpets, violins, flutes, keyboards, piano, guitar, and bass. When I student taught high school teachers at the Boston Latin School, (Boston Public Schools) I taught chorus, string ensembles, AP music theory and all ensemble instruments in every family.
