Some students are more inclined to play by ear and others more inclined to read from the music. In contemporary Native Hawaiian culture, music making is a shared and collaborative space where people come together to create and learn from one another, regardless of how much prior experience you have. My relatives raised me with these understanding, and this is the type of environment that I like emulate and integrate with my lessons and students. Nothing is more rewarding then seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it is important that each student progress at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. My teaching is very goal-oriented. Some adults may want the satisfaction of simply playing Blues, or Fur Elise, or "Don't Stop Believin'" for their own enjoyment, and we work through the music easily as their practice time allows. Parents have the opportunity to see their children shine in recitals twice a year. During their lessons, the younger student and I work hard on note-reading, rhythm, and expression. I cater every lesson to the individual, but I highly emphasize the use of exercises for everyone. For piano students, I love using the Dozen - A - Day books because they include many different 5-finger exercises that are really helpful in warming the fingers. I also will bring in the use of scales and chords, no matter what we're learning, so that students can understand playing music in any key. Read More
