For beggining students, I start with fundamentals, holding the guitar/pick, posture, and then start with some tremolo (up and down) picking patterns, a few basic open chords, a basic scale, and then pick a simple song to learn. As, we progress, I try to evolve with the student, getting more specialized in whatever genre they are leaning towards, all the while teaching songs and helping them to learn what they like. My teaching method is very keen to diagrams. In my experience, it can be hard to visualize some of the terminology that is provided my teachers. Using diagrams helps to put the instructors words into a more visual format. I have played with multiple orchestras community and semi-professional and community bands in Central Florida. I have also participated in WGI and DCI ensembles as a mallet or Synth or keyboard player. I studied classical voice for two years with Mark Baker former tenor for the Met Opera house. For piano I prefer Faber Piano Adventures and have different books I would recommend starting with depending on the students age and experience. For guitar and ukulele I prefer using the Hal Leonard method books. I often supplement these method books with outside sources and pieces as is appropriate for the student. For singing students, I have a wide variety of books and resources depending on the musical style. I come from a classical voice background, so when students are middle school age and older (sometimes earlier) we begin learning Italian Art songs in addition to musical theater pieces and English folk songs.
