Once the student has a basic understanding of music, I would then talk about the Circle of Fifths and encourage them to participate in events like concerts or festivals in school. My teaching style is "individualized." Although basic fundamentals are needed for anyone, where the focus is taken from there is completely up to the individual. Music is a diverse experience and I believe there isn't a one size fits all approach. I decided to offer piano and general music lessons while I was attending college. It turned out to be very fun and rewarding to see my students begin to understand and apply the concepts I taught them.
