In recent years I have found that many music lessons tend to boil down to the student practicing material given to them, and the teacher telling them if they played "good" or "bad." We will start with the fundamentals of our vocal instrument, air flow, breath support, and the components of the body that make up the vocal passage so they can understand how singing actually works. We will do vocal warm ups and exercises to open the voice and prepare them for singing. We will do some playing together so i can determine what you've already gotten "under your hands". Or if you're a complete beginner we'll start from the beginning. I'll find out what your musical interests and inspirations are and we will incorporate that into the overall context of learning to play music well. We'll of course work on scales and arpeggios all over the bass, in various fingerings etc, and importantly, we'll talk about WHY we're doing it! After receiving an Arts Leadership certificate from Eastman in addition to my BM, I am a huge advocate for music in society and believe it is a universal language that anyone should have access to, no matter age, ability, etc. I want my students to feel empowered and believe that they have a place in the world of music, because there is room for everyone!
