In 2005 she was awarded 3rd prize of the concerto competition as well as a substitute position with the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra where she had the opportunity to play many of the greatest orchestral masterpieces under world-renowned conductors. Shortly after graduating she moved to the city of Cincinnati OH, where she studied privately with the principal flute of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Mr. Randolph Bowman. I have had various private students since 2006, teaching students in many topics including, saxophone, clarinet, jazz theory, composition, improvisation, and jazz piano. From summer of 2013 to spring of 2018 I taught private saxophone and clarinet lessons for Shrewsbury Public Schools, while taking private piano, clarinet, and theory students from the Music Teachers Network referral until 2017. I am a very active musician that has an innate love of teaching. I started playing the clarinet at age 10 and quickly gained interest in playing more than just one instrument. Fast forward to high school, where I am playing Tuba in the marching band, clarinet in the concert band, and saxophone in the jazz band; this is where I know I wanted to share my passion for others. Students learn best in a relaxed, nurturing environment.  I believe in order to successfully teach, I need to be encouraging, and truly care about the students.  My goal is to always have the students improve.  To do this, I think students need a well-balanced diet of tone (Moyse De la Senorite can be used), technique (scales for younger students, Maquarre Daily Excercises or Taffanel and Gaubert Daily Excercises for more advanced students), etudes (Melodious and Progressive Studies), and pieces (I consult the NYSSMA manual for appropriate pieces for the students level).  Having taken Alexander Technique, I strongly emphasize posture so that students can use their bodies in the most efficient way.  Individualized instruction allows for teachers to cater to the needs of the student, challenging the students without frustrating them.  Everyone is unique and learns at different rates, so no two lessons will ever be the same.  I teach students how to practice, so that they can progress outside of the 30 min. or hour long lesson.  As for performance standards, I have used rubrics for tone, technique, articulation, phrasing, and breathing.  Once strengths and weaknesses are assed, I create a plan to help the student improve, which is what students and teachers want to hear. I am a dedicated flute instructor and performer who loves sharing her passion for music through teaching and empowering her students to meet their musical goals. I earned my Master of Music degree in flute performance from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign and my Bachelor or Music degree from the University of Colorado Boulder. This, combined with gauging each student's skill level and needs, is the basis of my teaching style. I never use negative incentives with my students, as I believe that does more harm than good.
