Whether my new students are children or not, I will usually start from the basics and work our way up from there. With children, I will stretch the basic lessons further until they have a solid foundation to build on. I write out every single lesson plan by the date and have each student do the same so that we do not lose track of where we are. The goal is to make playing music less of a chore, and instead, have it be something they enjoy just as much as playing video games or soccer. As soon as I meet with a student or a group of students, I make sure they are welcomed by an energetic teacher before getting started on their lesson. I try to keep the student(s) engaged by showing them different ways and approaches to music from books and my own personal approaches to help them grow knowing their teacher is well experienced. Since their is a lot for a percussionist than just playing with sticks on a drum, there is no doubt that the endless possibilities in teaching students the various instruments will help keep them engaged as well being more excited about music. I, Michael G. Turner, breathe through music. My love for music began at a very early age and I was blessed to realize, very soon, that it was my passion.I began performing at the age of 13 on clarinet, in voice, and on drums and percussion. Most of my early performance experience was obtained in church, school, and in my older brothers' Top 40 band. I first like to establish a strong internal clock in a new student. I think it is important to understand the feeling of each beat. To learn proper coordination I like to use the book "Syncopation" to practice playing rhythms with multiple limbs as well as learning how to read music. For beginners, I will start with no sticks in the hands at all! Just tapping on your legs with your hands and getting all of the limbs to work together is hard enough! Then we will put sticks in your hands and learn technique, and finally introduce reading music. One step at a time is the best as to not overwhelm the student. Reading music is an essential element to my teaching style and is a huge advantage when learning an instrument. Read More
