I always start by just hearing my students sing. I listen for the breathe that they use, where the voice is placed and the tone of the voice. If they sound as though that they could delve into a different genre as well as the genre they choose, I would give them an option to see if one genre feels just as comforting as the other. I have made sure to transfer all of these skills to my private teaching. I am very direct with my students and act as facilitator in lesson discussions, and to try not making decisions for them. I heavily employ the "trial by fire" and "sink or swim" methods, as I've found those the most effective in my lifetime of learning new things.
