I have a friendly and laid back teaching style, maintaining student/teacher professionalism. How much or how fast the student learns depends a lot on how much they practice. I've been teaching music, in some capacity, since I was 17 and captain of my highschool's drumline. In college I taught drumset lessons to students of all ages and in graduate school I taught a music theory course for 5 semesters as well as classical percussion to 6th - 8th graders. Getting to know my students, what they like and don't like, what they read and listen to, is one of my favorite things and I think it really helps engender a life long passion for music when a teacher takes a personal interest in the students lives. My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 30 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 15 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. It’s important that expectations are set at the very beginning. I like to have fun with my students but I also keep them accountable. I set realistic practice goals and SMART goals towards bigger quarterly goals whether that’s a recital or a YouTube video for online students. I graduated with my Bachelor’s in Music Education from Wartburg College in 2004.  I then moved to Wisconsin where I was a middle school and high school choir director for seven years.  There I taught chorus, private and group voice lessons, piano class, general music class, and also organized the middle school talent show.  I later moved on to Hawaii where I taught private voice and piano lessons through Musikgarten Hawaii.
