I have B.M. in Acoustic Composition and Electronic Music, 10 years of playing/performing French horn, 5 rigorous years of piano instruction and performance, and a whole lifetime of singing. For beginning students, I prefer to use Essential Elements by Bruce Pearson. This is the book I learned from and have been using to teach. I enjoy this book because of its progression system and the incorporation of solos throughput instead of just exercises for the students to play through. For beginning piano students, I typically start with John W. Schuam's Piano Course: Pre-A (AKA "The Green Book) and John Thompson's "Note Speller" (AKA "The Red Book").
