The methods and approaches I use depend greatly on the student and their needs. The most important thing for me is to find repertoire that addresses the students needs and interests. For classical guitar students, there are a variety of methods that I regularly utilize (Julio Sagreras, The Royal Conservatory Series, Suzuki Guitar Method, Charles Duncan), and often supplement with other pieces/etudes. For other styles, I build lessons around playing music that the student is interested in, and include technical and musical exercises when needed. Read More

Though I have strongly sharpened my skills and can adapt to almost any learning style, I continue to research and experiment and find different ways to adapt to my students. My love for music and my desire to see students succeed creates an infinite amount of patience and understanding within the context of our lessons. I can empathize with enjoyment for learning as well as frustration in failure. This enables me to share the solutions that I've found to the mistakes I've made over the years with my students so that they develop good habits from the beginning. Read More

I employ the use of scales and harmonizing techniques if so desired, but mainly focus on what the student would like to be able to accomplish in his or her time with me. I like to let them pursue their own directions while overseeing that they learn the fundamental aspects of their chosen genre or genres. Learning and especially music should maintain FUN as a central priority, because without excitement over the topic and enthusiasm in development, it becomes easy to get bored and walk away from the activities. I began teaching bass in high school to elementary and middle school students. In college, as my knowledge of music theory expanded, I began teaching guitar and voice as well. Students need not be able to read music to study with me, although if we begin a professional relationship, know that I use much theory and classical techniques in all styles of playing on both guitar and bass. I'm currently teach jazz music the most, but I have found that covering more styles as a teacher reminds me of how connected the world of music really is and I'd love to get back into teaching rock, classical, funk and other styles of music.
