Although I and most guitar instructors feel that students should start on an acoustic guitar (the reason is proper right and left hand position) I do not turn electric guitar students away and am able to work well with them. Most students want to "Rock Out" and I do guide them in that direction or whatever direction the student or parent requests. I always find out first and foremost what music the student enjoys, and we will build foundational skills to be able to get there. Studying/learning songs is always a great way to begin to introduce my students to repertoire, especially if there are already songs they love. For any adults, we will work together to determine what they want out of their musical experience and work from there. I believe that music can be an excellent outlet and I want to give my students the tools to express themselves, whatever that looks like. Read More

For beginning students I use very little of a method book. I find it that is important that one learns to make a good sound and has fun with the instrument in the early phases. During this time I cover chords, basic finger and pick technique, proper posture, lead sheets, and blues improvisation. I then transition into Charles Duncan's "A Modern Approach to Classical Guitar." This book provided a solid foundation of the ability to read written sheet music.
