I decide my methodology depending on the age, skill level, and individual goals and interests of each student. For very young pre-school students, I'd encourage them to learn the music by ear (Suzuki method) and through repetition in various ways. For older school-aged students I strongly believe in the importance of note-reading and I might use the Essential elements method books, that introduce the musical notation and theory concepts in a way appropriate for people with no prior musical training.
