Instruments: Piano, Violin, Cello, Viola, Double Bass

For students interested in studying stringed instruments, I have found that the Suzuki method is a very effective curriculum for young children who cannot yet read well, yet engaging enough for older students if supplemented with note-reading and technique exercises. Hal Leonard's Essential Elements and Robert Frost's All for Strings are two other proven methods that work well for almost any age. Young piano students do very well with Alfred's Basic Piano Course or Faber Piano Adventures methods, and Bastien and Alfred both have methods for adults that seem to promote quick learning. Instruments: Violin

The importance of how the teacher transfers their method is dire in helping students develop and grow. Learning that each student has their own pace at learning an instrument is also very important on both sides tof the teacher and student, so using whatever to help a student grasp how to play is key. It is also very heart-warming to find out that a student used the same methods and stategies to aid in their journey of learning an instrument just like myself. Read More

Instruments: Violin

Beginner students typically start with Essential Elements. Once the basic fundamentals are grasped, the student will be introduced to repertoire in Suzuki. Intermediate and advanced students will be introduced to solo repertoire that may include concertos, sonatas, and etudes. Scales will be an essential part of practice. My method is to keep students engaged and challenged by setting small goals each lesson for students to accomplish in order to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Read More

Instruments: Piano, Voice, Violin, Viola

When I was a young viola student I was taught using the Suzuki method. For beginner-intermediate violin/viola students I find this to be very effective, and would supplement this with a variety of technique exercises as well as something of personal interest to each student (folk style, pop, etc). After some time, when I feel a student has a solid grasp of fundamentals, I will begin to introduce appropriate solo repertoire. Read More
