I adjust my private instruction based on student interests- if a student is into composing or using programs like finale or garageband, we construct lesson content around these interests. There's always the inclusion of music theory, at all levels of experience, because I feel that it is necessary for students to understand how the music is created and why in order to become better performers and musicians. I never let a student let a bad day get in the way of having a productive lesson- I like to touch base on how they're doing, and if things aren't going so well, we will always be able to find something positive that's going on in the lesson. For early students, I typically start with the Suzuki books, as I like the organized technical and musical progression of each piece. As the students develop I begin to add supplimentary materials such as etude and scale books. Students can progress from open strings to Bach with ease. I been playing the piano since age 3 (over 40 years ago!). Since getting certified, I can play and teach all instruments, with piano being my primary instrument. I encourage regular practice and strive tocoordinate the students' schedule along with musical success. Parental involvement is essential. As little as reminding the student to practice daily! I follow my teacher's teaching because I have seen that it has worked on so many other people that have become amazing performers, and since my teacher is from the old German school, he is very strict in how technique should be learned. For beginners I start with Friedrich Dotzauer "113 Cello Etudes" to form foundation and technique, After a good foundation, the intermediate level is with Friedrich Dotzauer Exercises for the cello Book 1 and book 2, at this point some repertoire will be introduced to the student as well as the style of repertoire piece that will be studied and practiced, the student will pick repertoire so it can be fun for both parties.
