For beginning students, I typically start them with learning the notes, staff, beats, etc. Once the student has mastered those abilities, I begin to introduce playing "by ear" as I like to call it. This process involves the student choosing the song and learning how to play it solely by listening to it and figuring out the chords. Hi! I'm Maeve. I am a professional soprano with 13 years of instruction and 4 years of paid experience as a performer under my belt. Since 2011, I have attended voice programs at Interlochen Center for the Arts, Brevard Music Center, and VOICExperience, and I regularly work in churches and sing weddings. I recently graduated from the University of Kentucky, where I studied with Dr. Dennis Bender. During my 14 years of music teaching experience, I have worked with students as a public school music teacher, a studio private lesson teacher for piano, voice, oboe, flute, clarinet and saxophone. I've started studio programs for music theory, group piano, preschool music and musical theater. I've worked with students of all ages and experience levels who have a wide range of musical goals. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Burnam's A Dozeon A Day and Faber's Piano Adventures. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For students who take ABRSM exam, I will not only focus on playing of three repertoire, but also the skills of sight-playing and ear-training. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Read More
