I have four years of experience tutoring both native and non-native speakers of English at the University of Kentucky Writing Center. While I have taught only a handful of music students for a short amount of time, I believe that my extensive performance background and rich technical foundation, combined with my years of teaching and tutoring student writers, makes me uniquely qualified to lead you on your vocal journey. For children who are beginner students, I use the Alfred's Basic Piano Library lesson books. After completion of level 1, I encourage my students to find songs they might enjoy learning outside of their lesson book. For older beginners I create unique lesson plans and assignments, based on those students' musical tastes and preferences, that help them progress at their own pace. I generally first start with finding out what my student is interested in. I have primarily used Alfred's Basic Piano Library with my younger students but am open to suggestions. I base my selection of each individual student, as long as the core fundamentals are used. I do enjoy the interactive workbooks for younger students, as I've seen repetition has a major effect. Sometimes musicianship is as much "caught" as it is "taught." So, it's important to carefully monitor and foster a student's progress. I will use a lot of coaching, affirmation, reassurance, and encouragement to fuel a student's progress and desire to stay with it. I began teaching percussion immediately after high school. While attending EKU, I helped my former high school by teaching the percussion section during the marching band season. I taught the section every year for about 12 years before being hired as a full-time teacher and becoming the assistant director of the band. I still mainly focus on the percussion section every year, but my responsibilities have spread to assisting with other sections of the band as well. Read More
