My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 20 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 4 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. My teaching style includes using multisensory techniques that get the students reading music, listening to music, playing music, and more. I have discovered over many years of teaching that there are many different styles of learning different concepts. What may click for a student in one part of a lesson visually may not click aurally. I generally first start with finding out what my student is interested in. I have primarily used Alfred's Basic Piano Library with my younger students but am open to suggestions. I base my selection of each individual student, as long as the core fundamentals are used. I do enjoy the interactive workbooks for younger students, as I've seen repetition has a major effect. Writing out the information does help, even if it isn't written on the music itself. Read More
