For beginning students, I typically start them with learning the notes, staff, beats, etc. Once the student has mastered those abilities, I begin to introduce playing "by ear" as I like to call it. This process involves the student choosing the song and learning how to play it solely by listening to it and figuring out the chords. For beginning woodwind students, I find the Standards of Excellence Books to be a great starting point to establish technique, breath support, musicality and basic music reading while still allowing the capability to add beginning solo pieces depending on the student.
