Our music lesson students will have the opportunity to take lessons from the comfort of their own home or in one of the teachers studios. Careful attention is placed on each student to ensure a custom lesson plan. I have taught several improvisation courses and directed jazz big bands at Florida State University and their music summer camps. I was a saxophone instructor for the Byron Center High School Marching Band. I have given private instruction to middle school students, high school students, and college students for the past six years. For younger students, I utilize method books to familiarize the student with reading music. Scales, and whole tones to develop the embouchure and intonation. For intermediate and advanced students an emphasis is placed on mastering the essentials necessary to succeed in the musical ensembles and as a soloist.Articulation, timing, phrasing and dynamics are the key focus to further the players technique. I began teaching as a teenager when I was in Ann Arbor's psychedelic rock band SPROTON LAYER. I have taught friends and family off and on for many years. During the economic crash in 2009, I took a course on Teaching to understand different age groups and varied approaches in learning. Since then, I have taught steadily and found it very rewarding. I believe that there is no style of teaching that works universally for every student. While there are techniques and methods that all students need to learn, each student has different interests and learns in a myriad of ways. Therefore the pacing, mood, and content of the lesson will vary from student to student. I encourage students to practice regularly, reinforcing the notion that consistent practice is better than high sporadic practice--it's better to spend 15 minutes on the instrument every day rather than an hour on your instrument one day of the week.
