I discovered my musical interests and performance abilities through private piano lessons, dance classes, private voice lessons, and musical theatre acting workshops. I began my teaching experience as an assistant instructor/choreographer for the StarBright! Youth Musical Theatre classes at a local community theatre. At the start of my junior year of high school, I began teaching piano to a handful of students in my small town. It was such an exciting experience! I taught a few very young students whose moms wanted them to try out the instrument and learn some fundamentals, and I taught a few older students who just wanted to know how to play some of their favorite songs. I have been teaching music for nearly 20 years. I am the after school music teacher for the Norwood School District. My primary goal is to make sure students are having fun and enjoying themselves during lessons. I have a laid-back disposition. During the first lesson Ill ask students what they would like to learn about. Then my goal is to facilitate how to reach that goal. For the youngest beginners, my focus is on the enjoyment of music. Using either The Music Tree or My First Piano Adventures, I teach children about the elements of music and how to appreciate music, before going into actual technical work on the piano. One of the things I love most is the shock of parents and students who expect that either they themselves are going to dread the lessons or practice session or that their child will give up and hate practicing. Parents and students tell me how exciting they are to come each week and hit each milestone. I make learning fun! Simple as that.
