I have taught privately since 1990. The music setting provides a rewarding, dynamic and fun experience to develop valuable learning experiences and meaningful relationships. I teach other teachers how to teach composition and creativity. I direct "Create Your Own Musical!" workshops for children where we write and perform dialogue, lyrics, music and choreography for a short musical. I also offer "Let's Create Music!" workshops for non-musicians in a variety of settings; participants learn about the basics of creating music by writing a short piece of together. Read More

As a non-classical instructor, I feel that too many teachers over-emphasize sight-reading which causes many other essential areas of musical to be neglected. My personal philosophy is that a "complete" musician is a well-rounded one, and a "well-rounded" musician is proficient in many areas of music (not just one or too). Music encompasses an extremely large range of skill sets I make a point to leave no stone unturned - I don't require my students to learn every area of music, but I do present them with many areas to expand their horizons. Its a great jumping off point to work on finger placement, rhythm and picking; all the while we get to learn a song, too! My intermediate students have focus heavily on musicianship. With these types of students I often play (or jam) with them during lessons. This gives them the chance to start really listening and to use their skills to function as a musician. I find students who miss out on this can often play lots of songs but sometimes are missing solid rhythm and finger placement work. Read More

Since an early age I have had mentors and teachers show me by example how important music education is to preserving culture. I have been teaching for five years, first teaching middle school students at music summer camps in New Orleans like the New Jazz School.
