Most beginner students will start with basic technique: How to hold a pick, where to place your fingers, etc. After that I like to move on to chords as quickly as possible. This may require some extended lessons on finger strength and technique. If I am teaching bass, the next step is feel and groove. Beginner students and I generally start our lessons with Mel Bays Guitar Method 1 and Intermediate to Advanced students and I start with William Levitts Modern Method for Guitar Vol. 2. When students have mastered the fundamentals of their specific lessons I work with them on songs of their choosing and we put those fundamentals into practice. My method for teaching is individualization. All my lessons are individualized for each student's ability level and musical interests. If need be, I use certain books to supplement my lessons and for personal at home practice. Normally I only recommend books to students that want to further their understanding and ability in sight-reading, drawing from my own experiences learning from various books and online sources.
