I consider myself to be both traditional and old school at certain times, however. I firmly believe that students will lose interest in music quickly if I always teach all students the same techniques and follow conventional music theory. For piano lessons I usually begin without any books until they are comfortable with the weight and the feel of the piano keys. After that I really like to use the John Thompson's piano book grade 1, and I have had many good results with my students in the past. Read More

I began teaching private lessons 5 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in their homes for the last year. I have been consistently teaching students in their home for the past year. Home lessons are wonderful because I feel students are more comfortable in their own environment. For beginners, the fundamentals are essential to building a strong musical foundation. These include the technical aspects of playing the horn, as well as listening to all forms of music in a concentrated manner in order to enable the student to not just PLAY, but to also LISTEN. Once these fundamentals have progressed, I like to introduce small amounts of music theory so that the student gain a better understanding of everything they play. Read More

In addition to teaching students with diverse backgrounds, I have taught students in extremely diverse repertoire as well, including contemporary commercial music and classical repertoire. I use my knowledge of 21st century pedagogy including anatomy, biomechanics and acoustics to help my students perfect their artistic craft in varied genres. Additionally, I apply my expertise in psychology, specifically motor learning, to facilitate their skill acquisition. Furthermore, psychological preparation is as crucial as one’s vocal preparation. For beginners, I usually start with John Thompson's Easiest Piano Course. Then, I progress onto Dozen a Day, and finally Hanon and Czerny. For the advanced students, I start right from Hanon and Czerny, and go onto Burgmuller. If there is time, I will add on Rebikov for hand separation practice. Repertoire is often chosen based on the student's ability at the time. I will most likely start with repertoire from Easy Classics to Modern, and later add on repertoire that matches the student's style (such as jazz or R&B). Read More

First I like to get a snap shot of the student's goals and sources of inspiration, once I figure that out I can tailor my instruction around their wants and needs. I see myself as an accountability partner with my students and so I help my students set goals for their progress, celebrate their successes, and evaluate the shortfalls. I encourage loved ones to be a supportive and active part of the process as that encouragement can fuel a student's desire to grow. Read More
