My starting point for my students is typically having them practice posture, hand position and proper mouthpiece placement. After this has been satisfied, I have the students blow using a breathing exercise. From this, I have the students play the first three notes out of their Habits of Good Musician Book 1. For beginners I generally use Rubank method. I feel this text is complete and covers all of the material that beginning woodwind players need. The intermediate method has even more material as well as repertoire to start the important process of learning longer pieces of music.
