I encourage positive self-assessments and self talk, and strongly believe that progress is based on collaborative efforts of the student and teacher. I began teaching private students while in college through a music store in Ellicott City, MD. I taught students from age 6 to 15. I had up to 15 students on varied occasions. I maintained students on and off throughout my 7 years of music teaching in public schools following graduating from college, but lost many students when I relocated from Baltimore to Lancaster. It is pretty funny but works like a gem. Toshio Takahashi came up with this way to have a concrete way to teach begiiners embouchure and sound production. When the student practices with the rice, they produce a powerful"toot" the first time the headjoint reaches their lips! I like to use the Suzuki materials for flute and also mix it up with favorite duet books and classic repetoire.
