For beginning musicians, I start by asking what music they enjoy and often have them start playing it within a day! Then we may proceed with auditory theory training, understanding rhythmic syncopations, and learning to apply harmonic modes. This is what I believe to be one of the most useful methods for cultivating a creative mindset and becoming a proficient player. My teaching style is supportive. I like to help teach a student how to practice as well as how to play. My fondest memories as a student were those where I was learning and listening to music with my teacher. Watching them react and feel the beats is an incredibly informative part of the learning experience. I began teaching in college and focused on motivating younger players to continue to exploring the instrument.
