I have been teaching private lessons in Manhattan and Brooklyn for the last 7 years. I decided to pursue my studies in music education here in the Central Valley to be closer to my family. While in high school, I also attended college seminars and courses that allowed me to graduate with a high school diploma and certifications in various musical courses recognized at a collegiate level (such as Music Appreciation). For any level I like to check to see if they have a solid enough grasp on fundamentals. For drum kit users I like to only have the kick drum, snare and hi-hat available. If its a more experienced player, I like to have them play a simple groove just to see where they are and tailor how I teach them to most benefit where they would like to go in their journey. I like too see where the study is playing-wise and design a custom learning plan for the student and his/her goals and help them reach their goals quicker with a planned practice schedule. I also start students off with reading which helps them better understand rhythm and being able to read music is a huge plus in todays music world. For new students that are beginners, I find out what music they like and what made them gravitate towards the drums. This knowledge is vital, for it is the opening for what I can do to get the student to develop a true attachment and love for playing drums. I have seen many young musicians get overwhelmed and grow a detest for starting music lessons with an instructor that gives the student a formula for playing drums that is the opposite of what they actually desire to play.
