I'm fortunate to have been a music tutor/instructor for as long as I've been singing. In 2007, I began tutoring music theory while attending school; two years later, I became an associate for Saied Music Company in Tulsa, Oklahoma. During my time at Saied, I taught piano and voice privately, while also working as a print music specialist. In 2015, I began teaching for the Central Community Music School in Edmond, Oklahoma and have worked with students from age five to age forty and up. Read More
Instruments: Voice
For my students, I like to start with repertoire appropriate to their voice type. I will work with each student on pitch, tone color and quality, diction, and breath support. Things will be taken at the pace of the singer. Generally, opera arias will be saved for students above intermediate level. For children, I will not give opera arias because of the level of difficulty and extensive damage that can be done to the vocal chords in doing so. Read More

For beginning piano students I typically use the Alfred Method. Once the student demonstrates a grasp of the fundamentals I introduce solo repertoire. For adults I typically use the John Thompson Adult Piano Course and we work together to find the solo repertoire. For voice lessons, I typically teach the bel canto style. I will work with vocalises that help develop breath control, placement and open vowels. I also use the Music Theory for Singers program to teach Music Theory and also use solfeggi to build sight singing skills. Read More

I cater my methods to age, culture, and interests of students. This allows them to achieve success at their own pace. Assessing the students age, interests, needs, and culture will contribute to the creation of their lessons. I also find that knowing the students levels and vocal ranges can also be helpful in creating lessons for the students. It is also important to know a vast repertoire of musical styles so that one can create relatability with the students. Read More

Music is a language! I teach music in a similar manner as we learn to speak. We learn to speak through trial and error having no wrong words and music should be taught in a similar fashion, where there are no wrong notes. We learn our speaking style, manner and/or accents by what we hear and this concept also applies to music; therefore listening is a crucial part for advancement and the pleasure of learning.
