The technique that I teach to my students has helped me sing for hours a day, and has gotten me through the most rigorous performances with no vocal strain or fatigue. I always introduce my students, no matter the age, to the Vaccai Vocal Methods book. This book has many exercises that takes the singer through all of the facets of their voice, and helps them hone their skills. My methods of choice for instruction are many due to the amount of instruments that I teach and the many levels of mastery within each concentration. For most woodwinds I begin with the Rubank family of methods and duet books. I favor many of the Berklee press books for music theory, voice, keyboards, genre studies, guitar, bass, composition, ear training, harmony and arranging. As a guitar teacher, I like to start with getting the student accustomed with each string, including how to tune a guitar and how to play different notes on each string. Next, I start teaching chords by starting with E minor and then moving as little as possible with the fingers so the student can understand the relation between certain chords. I try to incorporate different exercises for each piece of music to keep things interesting for my students. I believe active physical engagement of the body is important to achieve freedom for the voice. This is particularly helpful for younger children to keep their minds from wandering during the lesson. I often ask for feedback from the students, to check in on how they are feeling physically and vocally. During our lessons, I hope to train up students to be creative thinkers and discerning individuals so that they can find their own authentic interpretation of the song. Read More
