I teach strong instrumental fundamentals, along with music theory comprehension, sight-reading, and ear training. I also like to emphasize ensemble playing using instrumental duets. I use appropriate level texts based on the student's experience first and age level second but always teach from what will make either younger students or adults feel comfortable. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements or other method books that they have been using. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo trumpet repertoire as well as popular tunes that will easily engage with them. In addition, I will include some technical exercises to master their skills and endurance. My experiences as a musician include performing in both classical and jazz groups. I play classical music every day and I like for my students to study a classical piece because it helps them develop technique rapidly. As a keyboard player, I emphasize the study of scales and arpeggios and playing them with both hands. Based on the strength and weakness of a students skill, a customized extracts from several different method/etude books such as Physical Approach by Gordon, Cornet Method by Beeler, Practical Studies by Getchell and etc. will be used. For example, if a student excels in range but needs an improvement in articulation, effective practice pieces for articulation will be extracted from various method/etude books for enhancement. The collection of the extracts from different method/etude books will become a customized method/etude book to accommodate each individual students need. Read More
