My primary teaching philosophy is one of showing by example. Book learning is excellent and necessary and I use an assortment of standard materials and literature to assign lessons. I am especially fond of the teaching method of Laurie Frink and John McNeil and their joint manual "Flexus" and the basic Carmine Caruso embouchure studies literature. No two students are the same, and I try to take each student's strengths, goals and preferences into account when designing their custom curriculum. For brass, I devise custom exercises for the player in addition to using classic pedagogical texts such as the Arban's and Clarke books. For piano, I start students off with a combination of scale work and repertoire. All lessons with me will include learning a wide variety of repertoire as well as a fair bit of improvisation, as I believe it is an invaluable tool for developing ears, creativity and musical personality. My trumpet students have placed first in both regional and state competitions performing in both small and large ensembles. The wind ensembles I conducted also have participated in WASBE Conference, Jeju International Wind Ensemble Festival, WMC Kerkrade, and Midwest Clinic. I have studied with some of the greatest performers and teachers in the world and have also studied both Alexander Technique and Body Mapping, which has greatly improved my own perspective on the body's effect on great tone production and efficiency. I ensure that the student knows that I care, both about their goals, and them as an individual. I use a lot of humor and wit in my lessons to help make sure my students are relaxed.
