Originally from Houston, TX, I began my music studies in 2010 and graduated from Sam Houston State University with my Bachelor's degree in Music Education. I went to earn a Master's degree in Music Performance from the University of Houston in 2017. I recently moved to New York City after being accepted into the Manhattan School of Music's Professional Studies program for classical trumpet. In October of 2018, I won the 2nd trumpet position with the Hudson Valley Philharmonic Orchestra and have performed as principal trumpet and soloist with the orchestra. Read More

Aquiles Navarro is a New York-based trumpeter, composer and DJ of Panamanian heritage. He derives his sounds from folkloric music, salsa, and reggae. This eclectic music background, based on his upbringing in Panama has led him to collaborate with folkloric musicians, dancers, visual artists, actors, and poets. He studied in Panama with tenor player Carlos Garnett and trumpeter Victor “Vitin” Paz. After moving to the US, he received a Bachelor's degree in Jazz Performance at the New England Conservatory, and a Master’s degree from the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami where he studied with trumpeter Brian Lynch. Like Most trumpet players, I follow and believe in using essential trumpet books (Arbans, Clarke, Flexus, Schlossberg, etc) and use others that depend on the desires of the musician. For children and/or beginners, I incorporate a little keyboard, to help with some theory basics, since all the notes are laid out. I have always struggled with my musical interests differing from my teachers while growing, so I develop my lessons based on each student, and play music that will both incorporate the teachings of the lesson, and also play music that is enjoyable for them, as well as etudes, or anything they would like to work on. Some of my favorite and most rewarding feelings in life have been when students have an "aha!" moment. These moments come after consistent engagement with a concept. Thats why I encourage daily practice (of any length, as long as its daily.) I balance grunt work with fun work, making sure that students are learning music THEY want to learn. My lessons usually begin with a short warm up, followed by a review of the goals set last week, followed by the introduction development of a new concept(or two), and concluding with a setting of goals for the next lesson, with the answering of questions all in between.
