Instruments: Piano

I have been a high school and middle school teacher of the humanities for a couple of years now, which I have greatly enjoyed. In addition to this, I have a couple of piano students, which I taught for a while now. I encourage them to practice consistently at least for a half an hour a day so that they progress faster. In my lessons, I assign a classical piece, scale exercises, and even a pop piece to motivate them so that they not only continue to improve, but also implement what they learned in the pop piece itself. "To be inspired is great, TO INSPIRE is incredible." I love to inspire children and it gives me a great pleasure when they improve and do well. I started playing piano at a young age. My teacher was a very good pianist but a poor educator. Five years later I  found a new, wonderful teacher who inspired me to learn. I am grateful for her and her passion and I hope to give that knowledge to my students. Read More

Having at least some goal in mind and working towards that musical goal will help a student achieve success in whatever they put forth on their instrument of choice as well as music as a whole. It will be ultimately extremely satisfying to express feelings through the notes as we take them from on the page to in the air. Sharing this joy of music will be also undeniably rewarding from student to student as well as performer to audience. Read More

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
i encourage students to practice everyday if possible. Even if a student practices for 15 minutes daily they will notice progress in a few weeks. I constantly remind students to start using a timing source such as metronome and tap their foot to the beat. When music is executed effectively then its time to gradually increase speed. Vocal students are encouraged to learn the scale and to practice breathing exercises daily if possible. Rather than pushing for higher notes students should find their natural range and work on strengthening that part of their range. Developing healthy singing habits including diaphragmatic breathing is essential in vocal training.

When will I start to see results?
This depends on the individual. Some people progress faster than others. In my experience I have noticed that the average adult or adolescent student will notice progress in 4 weeks to 1 month. However this is under ideal circumstances if a person practices everyday (or almost everyday). Usually students measure progress by their ability to play their preferred music. Young school age children may develop skills faster with regular practice. With Vocal students results may be noticed within two or three sessions. Of coarse this depends on many different variables. We are born with our ability to sing. However very few are born with perfect pitch. When a singer learns to breathe with the diaphragm they will notice an improvement right away. However we need to develop these healthy singing habits with regular practice. Our body is the musical instrument when singing which is why we need to "train" our brain and body.

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
When a pre school age child (4 or 5 years) expresses a strong interest in playing an instrument this is a sign. Young children care nothing about self discipline so its up to the parents to encourage regular practicing. Every child has unique interest abilities. Although we all see preschool age children on you tube who seem to have mastered an instrument this is extremely rare. We need to impress on young children that playing an instrument is not instant but takes regular practice. Learning a musical instrument at a young age develops the synaptic connections in the brain. This development as well as learning self discipline can help your child in whatever discipline they pursue in the future even if they don't turn out to be a musical prodigy. Musical education can begin from day 1 by exposing children to music.
