My general philosophy in music teaching is to ensure that the student, regardless of background and ability, learns something from music aside from performance skills. Nothing excites me more than to see that a student feels happy from learning something new or overcoming a challenge. However, I also aim to build a positive relationship with students by seeking new ways to keep the lessons fun and to ensure that they are satisfied with the music they are learning, etc. Read More

I graduated from Marshall University in 2006 with a degree in Music Education. A former professional music educator, my desire for freelancing and travel led me on a varied path all over the U.S. and Europe. Finally having settled in St. Pete, I hope to return to an endeavor I love so much - teaching musicians! I've played on cruises, in orchestras and operas, for musicals, as a soloist, and as many jazz, community, marching, symphonic, brass, etc. ensembles as you can imagine! Read More

I grew up in the West Indies. This explains my easy -going, "no problem" attitude. I have performed as a piano soloist at various venues around the world ( churches, hotels, cruiseships, concert halls ) Despite having had classical piano training via Trinity College of Music and the Royal Schools of Music at an early age, I have always appreciated music of every genre. So as a child I took the responsibility of learning to play other styles on my own. Read More

My methods 100% depend on where the student is and where he/she/they want to go. I have the most experience teaching young students (about 7 years old) who have had no experience or instruction in music. In such a case, I start with the fundamentals of music (how to read music), theory, and keyboard skills. Compositional exercises and etude drills (i.e. Hannon) help to reinforce the new ideas and build basic skills. Read More

For students who are young children, I typically start by addressing the importance of playing what you hear. So, I will teach them beginner classics, such as Twinkle Twinkle and Merry had a Littl eLamb, but I also teach them what thunder sounds like, or a siren, and etc. by drawing on everyday life obejects that create noise. I then move on to learn my student's interests to device a method of positive reinforcement if they complete their homework asssignments or answer questions correctly, usually in the past this has been candy. I really covered this in the above information,so continuing in more detail,it really depends on each individual student, their level of ability and age that determine the course of study. It also depends on the instrument. Some instruments like piano, violin or viola, books are more practical because the music is notated. With most fretted instruments, music is written in tableture which was originally used for the lute and brought back i think in the 1970s.Its easier than reading music and is more practical for those instruments.
