My approach to teaching varies in accordance with a students playing level and needs. With beginners and young students, experience has taught me that it is best to get someone playing actual music as soon as possible, usually in the first lesson. It is just as well to have a student begin by learning a simple riff from a song that they like, as to make them learn some hokey melody from a one size fits all how-to book.Going forward, I continue to work with a new player on music that they would like to play, while simultaneously covering music theory, and technical information, as they relate to the choice of repertoire. I have had groups who become champions in multiple competitions, I have had students who became queens of jazz vocal competitions, I have students who eventually became professional musicians and vocal artists, and I coach too while they are in a recording studio especially with first timers. Set a specific time every day/week. Make sure the student doesn't eats a hour before the lesson. Put on your mind to "receive" mode and that there aren't any distractions in the room. If a section of a piece is problematic then we would work on that part first. A metronome can be helpful when practicing. If possible, internally sing the part you are playing.
