When I start out with a new student I like to see what kind of learning works best for them. Are they a visual, audio or tactical learner? from there I modify each lesson for each individual student. I make sure my lessons are a very positive experience with no criticism. I teach with charts, tablature and standard notation. My curriculum is largely up to my student, I write custom excercises as well as reenforce musical notation through transcription of the student's favorite music. Being classically trained I place a heavy importance on technique and the physical attributes of playing string instruments. My lessons start with the student. I am not interested in making my students play music they themselves do not want to play. For this reason I always start with students by asking them their goals and what music they get excited about. After these things are identified I then get right into the music. I take the great things about the Suzuki Method and use them (fun, creativity, by-ear learning, group jams). Then I take the things I don't like about the method and disregard them (pre-established repetoire, no composition or improv). I teach kids how to concentrate, how to teach themselves, how to ignore distractions, and the philosophy for joyful performance without nervousness.
